What are the qualities of tomorrow’s organisations?

Tim Leberecht’s TED talk on what makes a ‘beautiful’ organisation looked at the good, bad and, literally, the ‘ugly’ when it comes to qualities a company should encapsulate for the future. But ‘beautiful’ means different things to different leaders. In this video, we asked Ismail Amla, Capita’s Chief Growth Officer, and Serge Taborin, Chief Digital Officer, what characteristics are most important for organisations to embrace in order to make the business fit for the future.

A key theme is having a growth mindset – particularly in this period of rapid change. That means looking at what can be done to drive the business forward, and not being afraid to take risks. This requires building a culture that doesn’t just allow for failure, but embraces it, learns from it and uses it as a stepping-stone to success. That’s not easy – in fact, according to the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Risks Report, although the risks facing businesses are intensifying, the will to tackle them is lacking. But it’s vital that people experiment and take risks, as this is what fundamentally drives results.

A growth mindset is also essential for innovation, as is building trust – with colleagues, customers and partners – that must permeate the entire organisation. Serge highlights the importance of ensuring that everybody in the business has a voice and that they feel able to make a contribution. Insight can – and should – come from every layer of the organisation, and not go to waste. It’s not easy, but a growth mindset is essential if we’re to embrace the changes that are coming in every walk of life and make a real difference in society.

These changes are real – and they’re happening fast. As Ismail explains, the change we experience today is the slowest it’s going to be at any point for the rest of our lives – in fact, research by Microsoft found that 41% of British companies think their business models will cease to exist in the next five years thanks to artificial intelligence.

That’s why another key quality for tomorrow’s organisations is reinvention – learning, unlearning, being in a constant state of beta and evolving to stay relevant. After all, what made us successful yesterday was yesterday's approach - tomorrow's rules will be different, and we need to adapt and innovate to succeed in this ever-changing world.
